The Square Who Couldn't Rock 'n' Roll

This piece will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first piece of theatre I wrote and produced - and toured! I was sixteen when I started writing it and it went on tour when I was seventeen with me playing the lead role of the Square - after all, I knew all the words.

The Square Who Couldn't Rock 'n' Roll is a childrens' operetta and tells the tale of the square who lives in the Land of Circles. He isn't liked much and the circles certainly don't like his corners. The Ruler, (see what I did there?), decides the Square must leave the land of Circles and find his home elsewhere. It doesn't take long till the evil Triangle gets her hands on the poor Square and put him in her Freak Show, along with a curious bunch of misfits, or mishapes!

The Circles, under the rule of the Ruler, who has a heart, eventually save the Square, and all the other shapes.

With it's simple message of equally and 'fitting in,' It was very well recieved and went on to be performed at the Edinburgh Festival by students from The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Following that it was performed as a full length rock opera by the Wirral Youth Theatre at the Glanda Jackson Theatre in Birkenhead.

The Square was then performed by the No Limits group from MacIntyre Care, a  fantastic project that runs houses for individuals with learning difficulties. It really was an emotional production.

The operetta was last produced by the Active Drama Youth Theatre in 2010.
